Child Benefit

Child Benefit is a regular payment to help with the cost of raising children, and most families are eligible regardless of income. It's usually paid every four weeks and can add up to thousands of pounds over the years — but if either you or your partner has an adjusted net income over £60,000, you may have to pay some or all of it back through Self Assessment. Our High Income Child Benefit Charge calculator, a paid calculator, can show you exactly how much you could save.

Use this calculator to work out what you're entitled to, how much of the charge applies to you, and whether pension contributions could reduce your bill. If your adjusted net income is approaching £100,000, it's also worth knowing that crossing that threshold means losing access to 30 hours funded childcare and Tax-Free Childcare entirely — so the stakes of getting your pension contributions right are even higher.
